State Police Operation Results in Nearly 5,000 Citations

The Virginia State Police conducted a recent enforcement crackdown on speed limits, seatbelt use and impaired driving. Learn more about the number of citations issued in Operation: Air, Land and Speed, and how moving violations can affect your driving privileges.

October 08, 2011 /Automotive PR News/ -- Operation: Air, Land and Speed was the Virginia State Police's recent enforcement crackdown on speed limits, seatbelt use and impaired driving. Conducted during the weekend of August 19th-21st, officers issued nearly 5,000 citations for violations on the state's main interstates, I-64, I-81 and I-95. Combined, troopers issued 2,148 speeding tickets, 717 reckless driving violations and 181 seatbelt violations. The state patrol also made 12 drunk driving arrests and 24 arrests for drug possession or other felony matters.

Virginia State Police Superintendent W. Steven Flaherty explained that the operation was meant to save lives and remind drivers to make safe, responsible decisions while on Virginia's road. He expressed regret that many drivers did not make safety a priority despite the increased police presence on the highway.

Nevertheless, traffic tickets can be an expensive reminder about the need to obey traffic laws. Drivers cited for speeding can expect to pay at least $5.00 for every mile they are caught driving over the speed limit, in addition to court fees that would be assessed. Those charged with reckless driving face stiffer fines and can be charged with a misdemeanor.

Besides the fines and criminal implications, drivers may be assessed demerit points for each violation. Essentially, drivers normally start with zero points and accumulate one point for each year of safe driving, up to five points. Drivers can also gain "safe driving" points by completing defensive driving classes. However, traffic violations result in demerit points, which reduce your point total. Demerit points increase depending on the severity of the violation. For example, driving up to nine miles above the speed limit will result in three demerit points, aggressive driving is a four demerit point violation and reckless driving can be a six point violation.

As such, a driver with a +3 point record charged with reckless driving (a six point violation) could end up with a -3 point record. Negative point values and frequent violations can result in a license suspension by the DMV.

The preceding information is not intended to be legal advice. Those charged with a traffic violation in Virginia should consult an experienced criminal defense attorney.
